The skin is the front face, the window of our body and one of the 5 sense organs. Covering a 1.5 meter squared area for adults and protecting the body against external factors, the skin also balances the fluids in the body and keeps the temperature constant. The largest organ to sense the environment and alert is the skin. It is a fact that, next to many of its functions, having a soft, clean and smooth skin comes up as one of the first criteria to be assessed by other people. In short, the skin is important in terms of both health, and aesthetic and social existence.

There must be enough water

The skin is made up of layers identified as upper (epidermis) and lower (dermis).Epithelial cells are produced in the lower part of the upper layer. These cells form the corneous surface layer by moving towards the outer surface. Being the surface of the skin, this layer becomes the protective wall. Being renewed constantly, these cells need 3-4 weeks to move from the lower to the upper layer. When the skin layer formed by these cells consists enough water the skin gains required elasticity and function.

If there is not enough water the skin starts to dry up

Skin is the organ that remove the excess heat produced in the body by evaporation. If the circulatory system do not carry enough water to the skin, meaning if the water intake is not enough, water level in the cells drop causing retardation of skin reparation and then starts drying of the skin. Drying of the cells that make up the skin has a negative effect on the appearance and health of the skin. In order to have a healthy, soft, and moist skin there must be enough water intakes.

The main reason of a dry and dull skin is dehydration. Dehydration occurs with water loss from the body. During dehydration, utilization from the skin’s water storage may not be compensated. Scleroderma is the most common skin condition resulting from dehydration. Skin gets thinner and peels on arms, legs, hands, and feet. The first step must be to increase the water consumption. I observe this case by monitoring increased water consumption of my clients.

The quality of water’s impact is comparable to care products

Also; a study showed that consuming an additional litre of water in a day increases the water content of the skin significantly. The dryness and roughness goes away; while the elasticity increases. According to researchers, these positive changes are comparable to the benefits of the care products applied to the skin. For the physiology and health of the skin and especially to prevent the dryness, importance of sufficient water intake is emphasized.

Our body needs 8-10 glasses of water to maintain its normal physiologic functions. If you are refilling your car before you are completely out of gas in order not to be stranded, you also should drink water before you get thirsty to prevent dehydration.
